Covering the Berlinale used to be my favorite annual gig for Artforum, even as the programming seemed to get worse and worse with every year. 2019, the year I moved to China, was the last edition I was able to attend. Since then, a new team has taken over, and I’ve heard the quality has greatly improved. Well, 2019 wasn’t all bad — there was, among others, Fatih Akin’s The Golden Glove, a film that everyone seemed to hate except me. Perhaps you have to live in Germany for as long as I did in order to understand the truths it conveys about about the German soul.
